Drafted first overall in the 2016 Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews burst onto the scene with a 4-goal performance in his NHL debut on October 12. In his debut, Matthews became the 1st player in NHL history to score 4 goals as well as the 5th to score a hat trick. After high level of play in the OHL where he was the most decorated player in OHL history, Connor McDavid was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Draft. After an extended absence due to injury, McDavid recorded a point in every goal during a 5-2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, his boyhood team.

The Philadelphia Flyers selected Shayne Gostisbehere in the 3rd round of the 2012 Entry Draft. After being called up a month into the 2015 season, “Ghost” quickly set records: becoming the first Flyers rookie to score multiple overtime winners in a single season, setting a new point streak for rookie defensemen to 15 games, and became the first rookie in NHL history to record 4 overtime goals in a single season.

The Detroit Red Wings selected Dylan Larkin in the 2014 NHL Draft and made him a part of the roster for the 2015-2016 season. Larkin became the 1st Red Wings teenager since Steve Yzerman to score in his first NHL game as well as score in 4 consecutive games. Larkin was named to the 2016 All Star Game.

Jack Eichel was drafted 2nd overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. Eichel, like McDavid picked before him, was a highly regarded prospect that some predicted would be picked first. In his rookie season, Eichel became the youngest player in Sabres’ history to score his first goal as well as leading the team in goals for the entire season.

Goaltender Matt Murray was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL Draft. While in the AHL, he set a new shutdown streak at 304 minutes and 11 seconds. He also broke the AHL record for shutdowns by recording 12 shutouts. He helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2015-2016 season.

Nathan MacKinnon was drafted in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. MacKinnon recorded 2 assists in his NHL debut while also becoming the youngest player to dress for an Avalanche regular season game. He’s also the youngest player in NHL history to record back-to-back two goal games. In 2014, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy and also named to the NHL All-Rookie team.

Ivan Provorov was selected 7th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers after being touted as a top prospect. He went on to win the WHL Championship with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 2015-2016 season and was named CHL Defenceman of the Year. In 2016, Provorov was named to the Flyers team after a strong showing in training camp.

The Winnipeg Jets selected Patrik Laine second in the 2016 NHL Draft. In the leadup to the draft, some scouts believed Laine would go #1 over Auston Matthews thanks to his dominant amatuer career. Laine recorded his first hat trick 3 days after his NHL debut. He then recorded a second hat trick 20 days later.
